Song for Whoever – The Beautiful South
There are always songs you like them so much that the songs can arouse your emotion whenever you listen to them. This chemical between an individual and the songs is so strange that it’s like a relationship between 2 lovers. It’s hard to share the feeling with other even if you share the same song with others. The person you shared the song with might not like the song as much as you did. In short it’s very individual.
This evening while having a chat with my wife, we brought up a subject that suddenly made me sung a chorus part of a song to her. A song from a band which is my favorite of all time, an old song that aged so well and always keeps my heart young as a teen whenever I listen to it again. The title of the song is “Song for Whoever” by The Beautiful South. It’s the band’s first single Back in 1989.
The Beautiful South
I was 14 when I first heard of this song aired on the radio without knowing who the artist was and the title of this song. Those days when internet was not available (let alone YouTube) and there were only about 4 radio stations in Malaysia, it’s not as easy as today to access any song we like and to find out the detail of this song, I have to tuned to that one and only English station available whenever I can and paid my attention from time to time to the songs they played.
I tried to Google this song and checked out in Youtube. I also spent times listening to other songs by this group. It was a 80′s and 90′s flashed back evening. The atmospheric, catchy melodies plus the clear and clean instrument arrangement of “Song for Whoever” will easily make everyone fall for it. The opening soft piano notes, the sexy and soft first vocalist followed by the the 2nd vocalist of higher pitch and yet magnetic voice during the chorus, the whole song is so stirring and yet relaxing after listening to it. Although until now, I’m still not too sure about the meaning of the lyrics, it does not stop me from singing along with the chorus… “Jennifer, Alison, Philippa, Sue…”.
