Last Words

June 20, 2011

In one of the episode of the sitcom “How I Met Your Mother”, the main character – Marshall’s father had passed away and his father left a voice message to him before he died. The whole episode is about his father’s last words and of course, Marshall was really touched by his father’s last words. Also in this episode, everyone was asked what their father’s last words to them would be should their fathers die.

It was an entertaining episode but I guess nobody will put in much thought about it after the show end. But not for me. My mind kept wondering what was the last words from my late father to me before he passed away. I even tried to ask what would be the last words from the one I loves? especially from the elderly. The more I asked, the more worried I was to imagine that they can leave me anytime without I know it. However, this feeling of uncertainty did not last long. I continued to recall what my late father last words before he died. I tried without  success. I could not recall exactly what his last words was; but I still can recall my last words to him.

In life, how many of us actually remember the last words from the one we love? On the other hand, do we ever wonder what is the last word we will probably hear from the one we love or what was the last words from them? In reality, we can’t predict what’s would happen to us the next minute or to the people around us, therefore we won”t know which words should be or will be the last words. A routinely morning greeting or good bye, an argument end with harsh words, a phone conversation, a joke during a drinking session, an order to do something could possibly end up become the last words from us or the one we loves.

In Chinese tradition, we try to avoid thinking or discussing anything related to mortal. But in reality, everyone will have the chance to say his last words. Today, instead of avoiding the “Last words” topic, how about we try to pay more attention to the our conversation with the one we love? listen to them and answer them in a nice way instead of rude and cold one.
